What is PTE?

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer-based English language proficiency test designed to assess the readiness of non-native English speakers to participate in a university-level English language instruction program. Administered by Pearson PLC, the PTE is widely recognized by universities, colleges, and governments around the world. The test evaluates a range of English language skills, including listening, reading, speaking, and writing.

Test Formats

The PTE is available in two main formats:

    1. PTE Academic
      • Purpose: Primarily used for study abroad and immigration purposes. It assesses academic English skills required for higher education.
      • Content: Covers all four language skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
    2. PTE General
      • Purpose: Designed to reward positive achievement in English language learning and is aimed at students and professionals. It is not typically used for university admissions.
      • Content: Consists of two parts – a written paper and a spoken test.

Test Components of PTE Academic

  1. Speaking and Writing (77–93 minutes)
      • Format: This section is integrated, meaning that both skills are assessed together through various question types.
        • Personal Introduction: Not scored, but sent to institutions with the score report.
        • Read Aloud: Read a written text aloud.
        • Repeat Sentence: Repeat a sentence after listening to a recording.
        • Describe Image: Describe an image displayed on the screen.
        • Re-tell Lecture: Re-tell a lecture after listening to a recording.
        • Answer Short Question: Answer a question based on general knowledge.
        • Summarize Written Text: Summarize a written text in one sentence.
        • Essay: Write a 200-300 word essay on a given topic.
    1. Reading (32–40 minutes)
      • Format: This section evaluates reading skills through a variety of question types.
        • Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Answer questions based on a passage.
        • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: Select more than one correct answer based on a passage.
        • Re-order Paragraphs: Re-arrange text boxes to form a coherent paragraph.
        • Fill in the Blanks: Complete the text by filling in the blanks with appropriate words.
        • Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks: Fill in the blanks by choosing words from a drop-down list.
    2. Listening (45–57 minutes)
      • Format: This section assesses listening skills through various question types.
        • Summarize Spoken Text: Write a summary of a spoken text in 50-70 words.
        • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: Select more than one correct answer based on a recording.
        • Fill in the Blanks: Fill in the blanks in a transcript of a recording.
        • Highlight Correct Summary: Choose the correct summary of a recording.
        • Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Select one correct answer based on a recording.
        • Select Missing Word: Identify the missing word in a recording.
        • Highlight Incorrect Words: Identify the incorrect words in a transcript of a recording.
        • Write from Dictation: Write a sentence after listening to a recording.

Scoring and Results

  1. Total Score: The total PTE Academic score ranges from 10 to 90, combining scores from all sections.
  2. Section Scores: Each section (Speaking & Writing, Reading, Listening) is scored on a scale of 10 to 90.
  3. Score Validity: PTE Academic scores are valid for two years
