What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most popular English language proficiency tests globally. Established in 1989, IELTS is managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge English Language Assessment. The test is designed to evaluate the English language abilities of non-native speakers, focusing on practical language skills required in academic and professional settings.

Test Formats

IELTS offers two main test formats to cater to different needs:

  1. IELTS Academic
    • Purpose: Primarily used for higher education admissions and professional registration. It assesses whether a candidate is ready to begin studying or training in an English-speaking environment.
    • Content: The test features academic language and scenarios that are likely to be encountered in an educational setting.
  2. IELTS General Training
    • Purpose: Suitable for those applying for migration purposes or for work experience and training programs. It evaluates practical language skills used in everyday life and workplace environments.
    • Content: Includes more general language skills and focuses on social survival and workplace communication.

Test Components of IELTS

  1. Listening (30 minutes)
    • Format: Consists of four sections with a total of 40 questions. The listening passages include a range of accents, including British, Australian, New Zealand, and North American.
      • Section 1: A conversation between two people in a social or everyday context.
      • Section 2: A monologue or speech, typically on a social issue.
      • Section 3: A conversation among up to four people, such as an academic discussion or interview.
      • Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject.
    • Tasks: Includes multiple-choice questions, matching, form completion, and short answer questions.
    • Scoring: Each correct answer receives one mark, and the total score is converted to the IELTS band scale.
  2. Reading (60 minutes)
    • IELTS Academic:
      • Passages: Three long texts taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. The texts are more complex and may include graphs, diagrams, and illustrations.
      • Tasks: Includes identifying information, matching headings, and summarizing text.
    • IELTS General Training:
      • Passages: Includes extracts from books, newspapers, advertisements, and workplace documents. The texts are generally simpler compared to the Academic version.
      • Tasks: Includes identifying information, matching headings, and completing sentences.
    • Scoring: Similar to the Listening section, each correct answer receives one mark, with the final score converted to the band scale.
  3. Writing (60 minutes)
    • IELTS Academic:
      • Task 1: Describe visual information (graphs, charts, diagrams, maps) or a process in 150 words.
      • Task 2: Write an essay of 250 words responding to an argument, problem, or viewpoint. The essay must be well-organized, and arguments must be supported with evidence.
    • IELTS General Training:
      • Task 1: Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) based on a given situation. The letter could be a complaint, request, or explanation.
      • Task 2: Write an essay of 250 words on a topic of general interest, discussing issues and presenting arguments.
    • Scoring: Assessed based on task achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource (vocabulary), and grammatical range and accuracy.
  4. Speaking (11–14 minutes)
    • Format: A face-to-face interview with an IELTS examiner. It is divided into three parts:
      • Part 1: Introduction and interview, covering familiar topics such as family, work, and hobbies.
      • Part 2: Long turn, where the candidate speaks on a given topic for 1-2 minutes after preparing for one minute.
      • Part 3: Discussion, where the examiner asks questions related to the topic from Part 2, requiring more detailed answers and explanations.
    • Scoring: Evaluated on fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.

Scoring and Results

ELTS scores are reported on a 9-band scale:

  • Band 9: Expert User
  • Band 8: Very Good User
  • Band 7: Good User
  • Band 6: Competent User
  • Band 5: Modest User
  • Band 4: Limited User
  • Band 3: Extremely Limited User
  • Band 2: Intermittent User
  • Band 1: Non-User

Each component of the test (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is scored individually, and an overall band score is calculated as the average of these scores.
